Important Health Insurance Information for Afghan Sponsors and Sponsored Individuals

Please be aware that if you are a sponsor or have been sponsored, MSP coverage may not be available for the first three months after your arrival in Canada. It is crucial to apply for private health insurance before entering the country to ensure you have necessary medical coverage during this period.

Without private insurance, you may encounter delays in receiving medical care or face substantial medical bills. Ensuring you have adequate health insurance will help facilitate a smoother transition and support your well-being.

In collaboration with Fraser Health, the Afghan Community Vancouver Foundation (ACVF) distributes booklets and brochures containing vital healthcare system information in English, Dari, and Pashto languages. These resources are designed to assist newcomers, including Afghan refugees, in navigating the complexities of healthcare access and services in Canada.

The materials provided by ACVF cover a range of topics, including:

  • Understanding the Canadian healthcare system
  • How to access medical services without the Medical Services Plan (MSP)
  • Information about the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) and its coverage
  • Guidance on what to do in medical emergencies
  • Tips for maintaining health and wellness in a new environment

These resources are crucial for newcomers who may face language barriers and are unfamiliar with the healthcare system in Canada. By providing information in Dari and Pashto, ACVF ensures that Afghan refugees can receive the necessary support and information to access healthcare services effectively.

For more detailed information or to obtain these resources, newcomers can reach out to ACVF or Fraser Health directly. It’s also advisable to visit the official Fraser Health website or the EthnoMed resource page, which offers translated materials in Dari and Pashto for various health-related topics, including COVID-19.

Remember, while I strive to provide accurate and helpful information, it’s always best to consult directly with healthcare professionals or legal advisors for personal circumstances. If you need further assistance or have more questions, feel free to ask.
